Melissa Colgan is the owner and principal designer for Melissa Colgan Interiors. Known for engaging, spirited and layered spaces, Melissa’s background as a magazine editor and interiors prop stylist for Martha Stewart, ELLE Decor, House Beautiful and Veranda magazines gives her a unique approach to interiors and an innate ability to put things together in a surprising and pleasing way. Drawing on her work as a prop stylist and set designer, Melissa is known for her sophisticated color sense, passion for thoughtful details, and her editor’s eye, resulting in layered spaces with a worldly spirit. Ever curious, Melissa’s evolving pool of inspirations include the work of the late Billy Baldwin, the textile combinations of fashion designer Dries Van Noten, the architecture of Piero Portaluppi, and the furniture designs of Jean Royere. Current projects include a cheerful take on a Hamptons home; a sprawling Southern Maryland compound where twists on traditional abound; and several DC area projects where layers of pattern and a lively mix of furnishings seek to elevate the notion of a family-friendly home. No matter the design brief, Melissa’s interiors are grounded in a belief that the places where we spend our lives should be welcoming, functional and a celebration of personal taste. Working closely with each client to guide their innate style, she seeks to breathe new life into a home while creating spaces that are functional, beautiful, and a portrait of their inhabitants.
