Yet most specification decisions are still driven by aesthetics and cost, with health as an afterthought dressed up in certification language. This panel moves beyond the checklist. AI is reshaping the design industry at a dizzying pace—from changing how designers work and run their firms to transforming the way clients approach the design process. As AI-savvy clients arrive with ChatGPT-generated ideas, images and expectations, designers are also figuring out how these tools can fit into their own creative and business workflows. As America marks its 250th year and the New York Design Center its 100th, three multigenerational American makers come together to ask what the next century of American craft demands.

These are designer-builders, not designer-marketers. Each brand owns its means of production, designs and manufactures under one roof, and is founder-led or family-led across generations. Boyd has a metal shop, Hilliard a bronze foundry and glass studio, Altura a wood workshop. Each one literally builds the thing it designs, in-house — which is vanishingly rare in a trade where most “American-made” brands are assembly operations or design houses outsourcing fabrication. The panel makes that distinction visible to designers and reframes three familiar line cards as institutions.

Ten years, multiple houses, and a working partnership built on more than logistics. Architect Jeffrey Dungan and interior designer Sean Anderson share something harder to schedule around: a belief that a house should hold feeling, not just function. From a lakeside home in North Carolina to Dungan’s own residence in Birmingham, Alabama, which Anderson designed and decorated, the two have spent a decade chasing the same invisible thing from opposite ends, the bones and the layers meeting somewhere in the middle. This fall, each puts that search in print with The Soulful House and Interior Narratives, two books, two disciplines, one shared instinct for what makes a house feel like it means something. Jill Cohen (Editor in Chief, Luxe Interiors + Design, and Executive Director, Sandow Books) joins Dungan and Anderson to talk about how that instinct actually gets built, the creative exchange between architect and designer, the trust it takes to hand off a vision midstream, and what it means for two very different practices to be reaching for the same feeling in a room.
